As we kickoff 2026, we’re excited to share some great news about one of our leaders who was recently honored for his dedication to senior living communities in Virginia!

Ed Corbeil, Vice President of Operations for Spring Arbor Senior Living, was honored by the Virginia Assisted Living Association (VALA) with the 2025 Senior Living Advocate of the Year VALA Diamond Award, which recognizes individuals and organizations that consistently advocate for Virginia’s seniors and the senior living industry.

Through his work with VALA, Ed has served as a dedicated leader and provided thoughtful feedback on both state and federal legislation as well as regulatory changes. He has represented VALA and the senior living industry at events across Virginia. Ed also has spoken with members of the Virginia General Assembly, the Board of Long-Term Care Administrators, and the Governor’s administration on many occasions. He has offered written testimonies and public comments on a range of bills and proposed regulations to ensure sensible solutions.

In its announcement about the award, VALA noted, “Ed Corbeil’s leadership, dedication, and unwavering support have exemplified what it means to be an advocate—not just for senior living, but for the people and communities it serves.”

Furthermore, VALA recognized Ed for encouraging others to participate in advocacy efforts. He motivated colleagues to participate in the legislative and regulatory process and ensure that their collective voice is heard by policymakers.

We at Spring Arbor have the good fortune of working with Ed daily and experiencing his commitment to our residents and senior living.

When asked about his reaction to the award announcement, Keith Ensey, Division Vice President of Operations for Spring Arbor Senior Living, said, “We’re all proud of Ed for this recognition. He is a leading voice for the senior living industry across the Commonwealth. His tireless advocacy has supported senior living communities, their residents, and the professionals who serve residents and their loved ones.”

We also caught up with Ed about this award. He shared the following: “I’m honored to be recognized with this award. I see the incredible impact that senior living professionals have daily. I’m honored to support their work, as well as our communities and residents, through advocacy. I always strive for policies that will continue to enhance the quality of care and facilitate a sustainable workforce. Both components are vital for the future.”

Congrats to Ed on this well-deserved accolade!

Why Summer Is the Best Time to Move to Senior Living: A Helpful Guide for Seniors & Families https://www.springarborliving.com/blog/2025/07/18/summer/ Fri, 18 Jul 2025 16:42:00 +0000 https://www.springarborliving.com/blog/?p=617 The decision to move into a senior living community is a meaningful one, and timing can play a significant role in how smooth—and successful—the transition feels. The decision to move into a senior living community is a meaningful one, and timing can play a significant role in how smooth—and successful—the transition feels. While every season has its benefits, summer stands out as the ideal time to make the move. With its warm weather, active community events, and greater family availability, summer offers a unique combination of practical and emotional advantages.

If you or a loved one is considering senior living, this guide walks you through all the reasons why making the move during the summer months can set the stage for a happier, easier transition.

1. Easier Weather for the Big Move

One of the biggest benefits of a summer move is the weather. Without snow, ice, or unpredictable winter storms, moving during summer significantly reduces the physical challenges and risks associated with packing, traveling, and unloading. Whether you're downsizing from a family home or transitioning from another living arrangement, warmer temperatures and dry weather make the entire process more manageable.

This is especially important for older adults, who may be more vulnerable to cold weather and its associated risks. From a practical standpoint, scheduling movers, transportation, or help from family is also easier when you’re not dealing with weather delays. Summer simply sets a better stage for success.

2. Longer Days & Better Logistics

Summer offers longer days and more daylight, giving you extra hours to pack, plan, and settle in without feeling rushed. The extended daylight also helps with visibility and energy levels, which is especially helpful for older adults who prefer not to navigate unfamiliar places in the dark.

This additional time is invaluable—whether it's finalizing paperwork, attending multiple community tours, or taking your time arranging furniture in a new space. With fewer time constraints and more flexibility, summer gives families and future residents the space to handle the transition with less pressure.

3. Mood-Boosting Sunshine

Sunshine isn’t just pleasant—it plays a real role in emotional wellness. Longer, sunnier days help our bodies produce more vitamin D, which is linked to improved mood and cognitive function. This is particularly important during a transition that, while exciting, can also bring moments of uncertainty or anxiety.

Moving during the summer means new residents can enjoy time outdoors, participate in wellness activities, and soak in the positive energy that sunshine often brings. This helps foster a stronger emotional connection to the community, encouraging faster acclimation and a more joyful start.

4. Full Community Experience

Summer is when senior living communities shine—literally and figuratively. Many communities host outdoor barbecues, gardening clubs, live music events, themed parties, and excursions, offering ample opportunities for residents to engage, socialize, and build connections right away.

Touring or moving into a community during this active season allows prospective residents to truly see the lifestyle in action, rather than just hearing about it. From afternoon yoga on the patio to evening socials under the stars, summer offers a full sensory experience of what life in the community can be like. This helps new residents feel included and involved from day one.

5. Family Time Made Easy

Summer often means more flexible schedules for family members, especially adult children and grandchildren. With school breaks, vacation time, and fewer holiday obligations, families are better able to assist with the move—whether that means helping with packing, driving, decorating, or simply being present to offer emotional support.

For many families, moving a loved one into senior living is a shared effort. Summer gives everyone the time and space to be involved, making the process feel more collaborative, supportive, and less overwhelming for everyone.

6. Ideal Housing Market for Sellers

If a move to senior living involves selling a home, summer can offer a significant financial advantage. The warmer months tend to be the most active time in the housing market. Buyers are more abundant, homes often show better with natural lighting and blooming landscapes, and sellers tend to receive better offers than they might in colder months.

By listing a home in the spring or early summer and moving by mid-to-late summer, older adults can often secure stronger offers and move on their own timeline. That flexibility makes planning a move into a senior living community far less stressful—and more empowering.

7. Maintenance-Free Living During Mowing Season

Let’s face it, summer can bring a long list of chores. Yard work, home repairs, and outdoor maintenance all ramp up during this season, and they can become increasingly burdensome with age. Making the move to senior living means leaving behind the hassle of mowing lawns, trimming hedges, and managing summertime repairs like roof leaks or pest control.

Instead, residents get to enjoy well-maintained grounds, shaded walking paths, and beautiful landscaping—without ever lifting a finger. It's a wonderful way to trade maintenance stress for peace of mind.

8. Climate Safety & Smart Storage Tips

While summer weather has many benefits, it's still important to plan around heat and humidity—especially when it comes to sensitive belongings like electronics, wood furniture, or family keepsakes. During the move, using climate-controlled storage or working with professional movers who understand how to protect items from summer heat can ensure a smooth transition with no damage to personal property.

Also, be mindful of hydration and heat exposure. Families should build in time for breaks, offer cooling towels or fans, and plan major moving tasks earlier in the day when temperatures are more manageable.

9. More Availability for Tours and Personalized Attention

Senior living communities are typically bustling during the summer months and often offer more frequent open houses, group tours, and one-on-one sessions for new or prospective residents. That means families get more time, attention, and customization during the decision-making process.

You’re also more likely to be able to attend events as a guest, meet residents, and even try a meal or fitness class—giving a real feel for daily life. Staff are often more accessible too, offering time to answer questions, discuss care options, or walk through the details of contracts and amenities.

10. Settle In Before the Holidays

One of the most overlooked benefits of moving in the summer is that it allows ample time to settle in before the busy holiday season begins. Residents who move in summer are able to build friendships, routines, and familiarity with their surroundings before the emotional and social busyness of Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s.

They also have the chance to participate in summer and fall activities, getting to know neighbors and staff before the holidays—ensuring they don’t feel isolated or overwhelmed when the season arrives.

Tips for a Smooth Summer Move

Here are a few helpful reminders to make your summer move to senior living even easier:

· Book movers early. Summer is peak season for moving companies, so schedule help as far in advance as possible.

· Plan around the heat. Move early in the day and keep plenty of cold water on hand.

· Use climate-controlled storage. If you’re temporarily storing belongings, protect them from the summer heat.

· Join early. Participate in welcome activities and community events to build friendships quickly.

· Lean on the team. Don’t be afraid to ask staff for help with coordinating move-in tasks, logistics, or even décor recommendations.

Worldwide, more than 55 million people are living with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia, and two-thirds of Americans have at least one major potential risk factor for dementia. As a nurse, I have spent the last twenty years of my career walking alongside seniors and their family members as they navigate these challenging diseases. The diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia is life-changing for everyone involved. That is why at Spring Arbor Senior Living, we are strong advocates and supporters of Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness month which takes place every June.

We are trained to think about ways to stay healthy. Everything from daily exercise to weight management, most individuals focus on physical appearance as an indication of good health but we don’t often think about ways to protect and strengthen our minds. Our brain's health isn't something to consider only in our later years. It’s a lifelong endeavor, much like caring for our physical heart or lungs. We nourish our brains through our diet, our activities, and even our social connections. As we recognize Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness month, I encourage each of you to engage in mentally stimulating activities – reading, learning a new language, solving puzzles, or picking up a new hobby. These aren't just enjoyable pastimes; they're investments in cognitive reserve, and work to build the brain's resilience against decline.

Diet is another cornerstone of brain health. The Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, isn't just good for your cardiovascular system, it’s a feast for your brain cells. Let's not forget the power of physical activity. Regular exercise, even a brisk walk, increases blood flow to the brain, providing oxygen and nutrients. It's a simple, yet profoundly effective way to support our cognitive function.

Beyond prevention, there’s the critical aspect "awareness". How many times, do we dismiss the early signs of cognitive change as he or she is "just getting old." While some memory lapses are a normal part of aging, persistent or worsening problems warrant a conversation with a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's doesn't offer a cure; it does opens doors to treatments that can help manage symptoms and provide access to vital support services. These early interventions allow families to adapt, seek sources for education and to make informed decisions about care. More importantly, it helps families focus not only on what might be forgotten – but what can be preserved. For example, families can begin documenting the life of their loved one early on after a diagnosis through interviews, the collection of personal items, and storytelling. These small steps can make a tremendous difference as the disease progresses.

I've seen firsthand the subtle shifts, the whispered concerns, and the eventual heart-wrenching diagnoses that mark the progression of Alzheimer's. It's a disease that doesn't just affect memory, it steals personalities, erodes independence, and leaves behind a profound sense of loss for everyone involved. As a caregiver working with residents diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia, our daily work is not just about administering medication or monitoring vital signs; it's about providing comfort, maintaining dignity, and offering a steady hand through the storm when days are hard. The loss they are experiencing is real.

My role extends to being a bridge between complex medical information and the lived realities of the residents and their families. I connect them with resources like the Alzheimer's Association, support groups, and respite care. It’s about empowering them with knowledge and reminding them that they are not alone on this journey.

Working with individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's has taught me the immense power of empathy, patience, and hope. It’s a disease that strips away so much, yet it can also reveal incredible reserves of love and resilience. As a nurse, I stand committed to raising awareness and promoting brain health this Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness month and every month. Every mind matters and every life touched by Alzheimer's deserves our unwavering support.

The decision to move a loved one to assisted living can be one of the most difficult and emotional choices we make. It can feel like you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place. You’re likely to experience a variety of emotions that are rooted in guilt, including regret, worry, and judgment.

This guilt monster is real for so many. Guilt is a natural reaction and means that you care deeply.

The truth is that you’re someone trying to do what’s best for a person you love, even when it’s hard.

Another truth is that even the most loving caregivers have limits. Your energy, time, and resources aren’t infinite. That’s not a selfish take; it’s reality. Assisted living can provide the care your loved one needs while allowing you to maintain your own well-being.

Even when you know that you’re making the best choice, guilt lingers. It pops up at the worst times, like when you’re driving home from a visit or trying to fall asleep. Teams at our Spring Arbor communities understand what you’re experiencing and are here to accompany you on this journey.

Here’s how to tackle that guilt, make the right decision, and even find a way to smile through it.

Why the Guilt Feels So Heavy

  1. Societal Pressure: Society loves to paint this unrealistic Norman Rockwell picture of families caring for loved ones at home, everyone smiling over a turkey dinner. Reality? It’s more like burnt toast and a lot of tough conversations.
  2. Your Own Expectations: You probably told yourself, “I’ll take care of Mom no matter what!” back when Mom was 60 and still beating you at Scrabble. It’s okay if circumstances changed.
  3. Fear of Judgment: Let’s be real, some people will judge. But unless they’re volunteering to help, their opinions can go elsewhere.

How to Know It’s Time

Making the decision isn’t easy, but there are signs that suggest assisted living could be the best option:

  1. Safety Concerns: Are there frequent falls, wandering, or difficulty managing medications? If you’re worried every time you’re not there, it’s a sign.
  2. Caregiver Burnout: Be honest with yourself. If you’re feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or resentful, you’re not doing anyone any favors by toughing it out.
  3. Isolation or Loneliness: If your loved one is spending too much time alone, assisted living can offer social interaction and community.
  4. Decline in Health or Hygiene: If basic needs aren’t being met, it’s time to consider professional help.

Tips for Overcoming the Guilt

  1. Reframe the Narrative: Assisted living isn’t “putting them away.” It’s giving your loved one access to care, community, and resources you can’t provide 24/7. You’re not abandoning them; you’re ensuring they’re safe and happy.
  2. Get Educated: Visit facilities, ask questions, and meet the staff. The more you understand the environment, the more comfortable you’ll feel about the decision.
  3. Lean on Support: Talk to friends, join caregiver support groups, or even see a therapist. You’re not alone, and sharing your feelings helps lighten the load.
  4. Involve Your Loved One: Whenever possible, include your loved one in the decision-making process. It’ll help him or her feel empowered and ease your guilt.
  5. Remember the Why: This isn’t about you. It’s about ensuring they have the best quality of life. Repeat that as many times as necessary.

The Silver Linings

Here’s the part people don’t tell you: moving a loved one to assisted living can actually improve your relationship. Without the stress of caregiving, you can focus on simply spending time together. Visits become about connection, not tasks.

Also, let’s not overlook the perks for them. There are bingo nights, a dining room that doesn’t serve microwaved leftovers, and a built-in social circle. (If your loved one’s anything like my Aunt Margie, they’ll be running the residents’ council in no time.)

Love Looks Like Many Things

The guilt won’t disappear overnight, but it doesn’t have to rule your life. You’re making a decision out of love, not selfishness. So cut yourself some slack, take a deep breath, and remember you’re human, not a superhero. And hey, even superheroes need a sidekick sometimes. For you, that sidekick might just be assisted living.

If you’re considering assisted living for a loved one, Spring Arbor is here to support you. We invite you to visit us or explore our website to learn more about our approach to caring for seniors. Our team is also available just to talk, answer questions, and help you through this process. We’re here to be a resource for you.

Spring Arbor Senior Living communities are proud to join others across the country to recognize Alzheimer’s and Dementia Education Week, observed from February 14th to 21st. This is a crucial time to raise awareness and provide education for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, Whether you have a loved one struggling with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, or you are a healthcare professional seeking more information on best practices in dementia care, there are valuable resources available to help navigate this journey.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Education Week was first organized by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) to highlight the importance of education and training in dementia care. This initiative aims to enhance understanding, promote best practices, and provide families and caregivers with the tools they need to support those experiencing cognitive decline.

At Spring Arbor, we are deeply committed to providing exceptional care and support for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. We proudly partner with the NCCDP on various initiatives, ensuring that our team members receive high-quality training to better serve our residents. Many of our Executive Directors and Cottage Leaders are Certified Dementia Practitioners (CDPs), demonstrating our dedication to expertise in dementia care.

At Spring Arbor, we integrate cutting-edge technology to enhance our training efforts and improve the quality of life for our residents. One such initiative is the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT), a program developed by Second Wind Dreams. This evidence-based experience simulates the daily challenges faced by those living with dementia, helping caregivers and professionals develop a deeper understanding and empathy for their struggles.

In addition, several Spring Arbor communities have introduced Tovertafel technology to their residents. This innovative interactive projector is designed specifically for older adults with dementia, transforming any surface into an engaging and stimulating environment. The games and activities encourage cognitive stimulation, promote physical movement, and foster social interaction—helping residents stay engaged and active.

At Spring Arbor Senior Living, we believe in celebrating life’s moments and creating purposeful journeys together. Our communities prioritize the holistic integration of mind, body, and spirit, ensuring that our residents receive a well-rounded approach to care. This philosophy helps individuals with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia live meaningful, enriched lives.

Jennifer Forrest, Spring Arbor’s Vice President of Quality and Education, a registered nurse with over 20 years of experience in the healthcare and senior living sectors, emphasizes the importance of compassionate, innovative care: "At Spring Arbor, we are committed to providing not only high-quality care but also meaningful experiences that enhance the well-being of our residents. Through education, advanced technology, and a deep understanding of dementia, we strive to make a positive impact in the lives of those we serve."

Supporting a Loved One with Memory Loss

If you have a loved one experiencing memory loss, it’s important to take proactive steps to support them:

  • Educate Yourself: Learn about dementia and Alzheimer’s to better understand their needs.
  • Seek Professional Guidance: Consult with doctors, memory care specialists, and dementia care professionals.
  • Encourage a Supportive Environment: Keep surroundings familiar, structured, and safe.
  • Engage in Meaningful Activities: Encourage participation in activities that stimulate cognitive function and provide joy.
  • Consider Specialized Care Options: Communities like Spring Arbor offer personalized care designed to enhance quality of life.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Education Week is an opportunity to come together as a community to support those affected by cognitive impairment. Through education, compassionate care, and innovative technology, we can make a difference in the lives of individuals living with dementia and their families.

At Spring Arbor Senior Living, we are honored to be a trusted resource in dementia care, helping residents and their loved ones navigate this journey with dignity, understanding, and compassion. This week marks the annual celebration of National Activity Professionals Week, which is the perfect time to recognize a huge part of our senior living communities – our amazing activity professionals. From planning engaging events to creating meaningful connections, they bring so much joy to our residents.

Maintaining an active lifestyle is important  for older adults. Participating in activities supports enhanced physical health, mental stimulation and cognitive health, social connection, and emotional health. The National Institute on Aging notes research has found older adults with an active lifestyle are less likely to develop certain diseases, have a longer lifespan, are happier, and may be able to improve memory and cognitive abilities.

Our incredible activity professionals work closely with residents at all Spring Arbor communities to offer engaging programs that ensure our residents live their life to the fullest.

When considering a senior living community for yourself or a loved one, be sure to ask what type of activities are offered, the frequency of those activities, and how engaged residents are. The responses you receive will provide insights into a senior living community’s priorities and their philosophy for providing care.

Our teams believe in taking an integrated approach to activities and wellness. In addition to striving for health, we focus on living life fully, in an individualized way. That’s why activities at our communities are crafted with heartfelt intention, encompassing a holistic array of activities that touch upon physical, cognitive, social, creative, and spiritual wellness.

Let’s take a closer at how activity professionals at Spring Arbor communities provide this integrated approach:

Physical wellness involves maintaining an active lifestyle, proper nutrition, and regular physical activity. Our teams emphasize the importance of exercises that improve strength, balance, and flexibility, which can help prevent falls and enhance overall mobility. Activities like walking clubs and group fitness classes promote social interaction and motivation as well.

Cognitive wellness includes engaging in activities that stimulate the mind and support mental sharpness. At Spring Arbor communities, residents enjoy activities like reading, puzzles, learning new skills, and participating in educational programs and lifetime learning. Maintaining cognitive wellness helps enhance memory, improve problem-solving abilities, and stay mentally active.

Social wellness involves building and maintaining relationships, engaging in social activities, and staying connected with the community, family, and friends. Our teams develop and encourage activities that support meaningful interactions, especially group activities.

Creative wellness emphasizes the importance of engaging in artistic activities to enhance mental, emotional, and social well-being. The types of creative activities that you’ll find at our communities include painting, drawing, writing, crafting, music, dance, and other forms of art. By exploring these outlets, our activity professionals help residents boost their cognitive function, express emotions, and experience a sense of accomplishment and belonging. Artistic activities also provide opportunities for social interaction, contributing to a more vibrant and fulfilling life.

Spiritual wellness encompasses both traditional and non-traditional practices. Whether through established religious practices or alternative spiritual approaches, the goal is to find meaning and purpose, as well as experience inner peace. This might include conventional activities like attending religious services, as well as more personalized practices such as meditation, mindfulness, or spiritual reading.

At Spring Arbor Senior Living we believe in celebrating life’s moments and creating purposeful journeys together. It’s why our communities prioritize holistic integration of mind, body, and spirit to ensure a comprehensive approach to care. The holidays are a time to celebrate with family, but they can also be a time when adult children recognize changes in an aging loved one’s needs. If you’re seeing signs that your parent or loved one may need more daily support, you might be wondering if now is the right time to consider assisted living. It’s natural to feel hesitation, even guilt, around making this decision—especially during such a special season. But letting go of that guilt can lead to something even more valuable: the peace of mind that comes with knowing your loved one is safe, secure, and cared for.

Embrace the Benefits of Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer a vibrant, supportive environment where seniors thrive. From 24/7 assistance to engaging activities, these communities prioritize safety, care, and connection. Moving during the holidays can give your loved one a chance to enjoy the festivities in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, surrounded by new friends, delicious meals, and events that bring the season to life.

Experience the Community Firsthand: Schedule a Holiday Tour

If you’re unsure, consider taking a tour during the holiday season. Many communities host seasonal events, which provide a wonderful opportunity to see firsthand what life could be like for your loved one. Here’s what to do on your visit:

  • Attend an event or celebration: Experience the lively atmosphere and see the joy these gatherings bring to residents.
  • Meet the team: Introduce yourself to the Executive Director and care coordinator and ask questions about their commitment to residents.
  • Share a meal: Enjoy the dining experience and get a sense of the food quality and the camaraderie at mealtimes.
  • Speak to other families: Connect with families who have already made this transition and gain insight into their experiences.
  • Ask about team tenure: Learn about the staff’s dedication and how well they know the residents they care for.

Taking a tour allows you to feel confident about the decision, knowing your loved one will be in capable, compassionate hands. By letting go of the guilt and focusing on the benefits, you’re giving them—and yourself—a gift that lasts far beyond the holiday season.
